We finally made use of a gift we had been holding onto for months: a prepaid weekend stay at a hotel in Trentino-Alto Adige.
The hotel, Lady Maria, is a cozy wooden structure with a welcoming atmosphere. One of the highlights was the generous buffet of vegetables and legumes, offering a great variety to complement our meals.
Starting from this comfortable base, we decided to go on two winter hikes, even though the weather wasn’t ideal. Rain was not in the forecast (otherwise we wouldn’t have planned the outings), but we did expect cloudy skies and limited visibility. We ended up doing two hikes over two days.
The first began in the village of Daunei and led us to Col Raiser. For the second, on our way back toward Milan, we stopped in a small hamlet near Temù, along the Oglio River, to explore a trail that runs through Val d’Avio, a side valley of Val Camonica in the province of Brescia, leading to Lake Avio near Edolo.
Day 1: from Daunei to Col Raiser
The first hike was a rewarding experience despite the overcast sky and low visibility. The trail was well-trodden, allowing us to enjoy the peaceful winter scenery. We first reached Rifugio Juac, which was open but too close to the starting point to justify a stop. We then continued to Rifugio Firenze, which was unfortunately closed. From there, we made our way to Col Raiser, where we took the cable car back down to the valley. It didn’t bring us all the way to our parking spot, though, so we had to walk an extra 30 minutes uphill to complete the loop.

Day 2: toward Lake Avio
We weren’t able to complete the second hike as planned. The trail was still heavily covered in soft snow due to recent snowfall and low foot traffic. Beyond a certain point, the path became too difficult to follow, with deep snow making it nearly impossible to continue. It was a shame, as we were quite close to the final ascent that would have revealed the view of Lake Avio.
